“One kind of learning comes from books. But the learning necessary for you to participate completely in your birth must come from you.”
Pam England, Birthing from Within
Modern parents -to-be go extreme lengths to feel prepared for birth. There are many kinds of pregnancy books available, many approaches are being presented and explained, numerous prep courses are being offered. The ways to fill the knowledge bucket are virtually endless.
However, birth isn’t something one can solely learn from books.
Expecting people need access to an additional kind of knowledge, the primordial knowledge.
The primordial knowledge is an innate, intuitive knowledge. The one that “just knows” what to do.
Many expecting individuals have the tendency to just fill the knowledge bucket, neglecting this intuitive, inner part of them. Maybe they don’t think it is important to tune in with it, or they dismiss it because it contradicts modern theories. Possibly, they forgot it is there, and that it requires our attention.
It is not uncommon for individuals to dismiss their intuitive and primordial mind and to blindly believe the way birth is depicted in movies or mainstream culture without questioning.
Intuition is knowing the truth, before you have proof.

What can we do to regain control of our intuitive mind?
The creation of a birth art piece, will help you get in touch with this part of your mind.
It awakes a kind of knowledge that has been there in you all along. Rediscovering it and learning to trust it, is essential in the process of understanding birth itself.
All the facts, information, statistics that we have come across while expecting, are stored in a part of the brain that is inaccessible during labor. While it is important to also have this kind of information, we need to be able to create a bridge to the part of the brain that is actually accessible during labor.
Whenever we create art, the right side of the brain is activated. This is also the part of the brain that is mostly active during labour.
This process takes you to the place deep within you, where unprocessed emotions, trauma and triggers linger. It helps you to bring them up on the surface so that you can sit with them and get to know them. These complex emotions and feelings are sometimes difficult to be articulated or understood, but with art they become tangible. More accessible.
Birth art helps you process your feelings about birth, whether you already gave birth or are about to. It does so by helping you connect with your pregnancy and the natural, spiritual process that is birth.
Your personal history (or personal knowledge) also comes into play. This is a collection of your experiences, habits and beliefs, all that makes you you. Birth art helps you find a balance with your book knowledge, your intuitive knowledge and your personal history.
What Can I do for you?
In March 2022 I completed the course in Birth Art with birthing from within. It was an incredible journey, and I am excited to use this tool with my clients.
